International ShUOC Selections 04/13/2012
A number of ShUOC's athletes featured in the first announcement of selections to represent Great Britain this year. Most importantly three athletes have been selected for the World Students Orienteering Championships in Alicante, Spain this July. There is talk of more joining them in support. Anwen Darlington, Kris Jones and Dave Schorah will all wear the red, white and blue in the Spanish sunshine. I'm sure good hydration before and during the races will be key. Perhaps they could give Joe Taunton a ring and ask for some gin tips. Dave Schorah (pictured below in a rather fetching get up) has also been selected for the European Championships after a solid set of selection races. John Rocke has also been selected (on a much less solid set) after suffering will illness and injury. Graham Gristwood has the "X-factor" and former ShUOC member Chris Smithard makes the team too. The European Champs take place in Sweden in may. SHUOC! Add Comment JK relay 3rd 04/13/2012
On Monday ShUOC mens team (Kelly Candy's Barmy Army) continued their stint on the podium at the JK relay with 3rd position. Some much older, more experienced/weathered and less attractive bodies were in the teams ahead of us so we can't be too disappointed with that result. University Orienteering Club of the Year 03/30/2012
Today Sheffield University Orienteering Club was named University club of the year by British Orienteering. We also came second in the overall competition looking at all the orienteering clubs across Great Britian. This is a fantastic achievement and shows that the hard work the club has put in in the last year is being recognised. http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/index.php?pg=1&action=news&id=MjQwMw==&rtn=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5icml0aXNob3JpZW50ZWVyaW5nLm9yZy51ay8= Last weekend, ShUOC travelled to the lake district to compete in BUC's Orienteering. It was a fine turnout from ShUOC with members representing both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. The individual race took place on Loughrig, a tough open hillside with lots of detail. This produced some fantastic orienteering for both the experienced members of the club fighting for medals and the beginners fighting to complete their course. The stand out performers of the day were Anwen Darlington, who took the silver medal in the womens class, and John Rocke, who's early mistake cost him a medal, finishing in 5th place in the mens. After the individual race, The University of Sheffield was in 2nd place behind Edinburgh University. The relays took place on classic lake district orienteering area Bigland. Offering a different challenge from the individual the fast but tricky forest offered great challenges to competitors. In the mens race, Sheffield Hallam's tactics of sending their strongest runners out first saw them fighting for the lead after two legs but a great run by John Rocke saw The University of Sheffield take a silver medal with Hallam pushed down to fourth. In the womens race, Anwen Darlington led The University of Sheffield into fourth place behind an Edinburgh clean sweep of the podium. Overall The University of Sheffield managed 2nd place behind Edinburgh university. In all it was a fantastic weekend of orienteering organised by Cambridge Orienteering Club.
